President Trump addresses nation, attack on Syria underway now

US-led missile strikes against the Syrian regime began at 9 p.m. EDT, following President Donald Trump's announcement of a sustained response to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's apparent chemical weapons attack in the country.

President Trump ordered precision missile strikes Friday evening on Syria in retaliation for a suspected chemical attack.

On Saturday, a chemical weapons attack in the rebel-held Syrian town of Douma was blamed on Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The US military, assisted by forces from the United Kingdom and France, launched the strikes targeting Syrian chemical weapons operations to punish President Bashar Assad for his alleged use of chemical weapons against civilians.

The US State Department said the United States has proof at "a very high level of confidence" that the Syrian government carried out the attack but is still working to identify the mix of chemicals used.

The US and Europe have both slapped sanctions on the Syrian Scientific Studied and Research Centre for its links to chemical weapons production in Syria.

Trump said that he chose to take action because last weekend's action by Bashar Al-Assad "was a significant attack against his own people", and "not the actions of a man, they are crimes of a monster instead".

Syria has denied carrying out the attack and its ally, Russia, warned that Western military strikes would risk starting a war.

On Friday, U.S. Ambassador the United Nations Nikki Haley said analysis done by the U.S., U.K. and France proved the chemical attack.

Speaking to reporters at the White House later in the day, Trump said a decision had not yet been made on a course of action.

The attacks were described by the Pentagon as precise and aimed exclusively at the regime's chemical weapons facilities.

French and USA officials are "working together very closely, and we will have decisions to take, at the time we choose, when we consider it most useful and most effective", Macron said.

Thursday: Russia's Embassy to Britain tweeted that the chemical attack was "fake" and an attempt to stage a provocation by Syrian extremists and their foreign backers.

US President Donald Trump is in talks with UK PM Theresa May and French President Emmanuel Macron about an appropriate worldwide response.

French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron claimed that France had "proof" the Assad regime used chemical weapons in Douma at the weekend, and would support any USA action.

He added that the joint military operation in Syria is legitimate, limited and proportionate, according to Reuters.

Mr Turnbull criticised Russian Federation for its veto of a UN Security Council resolution this week that sought to respond to reports of chemical weapon attacks.

But that the USA did not want an "indefinite presence" in Syria and would only stay until Islamic State was destroyed.

He posted on Twitter: "Never said when an attack on Syria would take place".

The ministry also pointed at previous use of chemicals by rebels in fighting with Syrian government troops.

Reuters quoted a US official as saying the strikes were aimed at multiple targets and involved Tomahawk missiles. But after being criticized for apparently telegraphing U.S. intentions, Trump on Thursday attempted to blur the timing of any potential airstrikes on Syria.

"Syrian air defence blocks American, British, French aggression on Syria", the reports said.

In that strike, 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles were launched from the USS Ross and USS Porter in the Mediterranean.

The intervention was the biggest strike by Western powers against Assad in the country's seven-year-old civil war and pitted the United States and its allies against Russian Federation, which itself intervened in the war in 2015 to back Assad.
