Search called off after woman falls from P&O Cruises ship

P&O cruise ship Pacific Dawn spent the night searching for a woman who fell overboard near New Caledonia in rough seas, but by Friday morning the search had been called off. A spokeswoman said doctors believed she would not have survived past 5am local time in the conditions. High winds and rough seas made the search hard.

The search continued throughout the night and into the early hours of the morning with rough conditions and large swell making the operation hard.

"The hard decision to suspend the search was made only after expert advice that survival after this length of time in hard sea conditions and after a full night at sea was not considered possible", Carnival Australia spokesman David Jones said in a statement.

In line with normal procedure, the Pacific Dawn incident has been referred to Queensland Police and to the Coroner for appropriate inquiries.

"It is with a very heavy heart that I need to let you know that we have been unable to locate our guest", the captain, speaking from the bridge, told passengers in a recording published by News Corp.

Passengers told News Corp the woman had gone outside to vomit and was thrown overboard when a wave hit the ship, with one saying her husband saw the whole thing.

Australian authorities have called off a search for a Brisbane woman who fell overboard from a cruise ship in the Coral Sea.

The Pacific Dawn was expected to arrive back to Brisbane later than its 6am Saturday scheduled time.

Other passengers said children that were near her also witnessed the devastating fall.

"The search, which began immediately after a crew member reported a guest had been seen to go over the side of the ship, was suspended in consultation with maritime rescue authorities".

The ship has now resumed its course to Brisbane.
