US Has History Of Meddling In Foreign Elections, Regimes: Russian Embassy

Pompeo confirmed for the first time publicly that he's been interviewed by special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating potential ties between Russian Federation and Trump's presidential campaign and possible obstruction of justice issues.

"But I'll tell you this".

Pompeo, who reportedly had been asked by President Donald Trump to intervene in the Russian Federation probe, confirmed the Mueller interview during a hearing into his nomination to become U.S. secretary of state. He lamented the "demoralizing" vacancies at the top echelons of the department during Tillerson's tenure and said he planned to fill those vacancies, asking the Senate's help to get nominees confirmed.

In a letter sent Thursday, Menendez asks Mueller whether Pompeo was forbidden from answering questions about what was discussed in the interview.

Mr Pompeo said Russia's push into Ukraine and other countries needed to be curbed.

Booker moved on to asking about Pompeo's comments that Muslim Americans have a "special obligation" to speak out about suspicious activity, and if they don't are "complicit" in terrorism.

"I don't know the answer to that".

He sought to pre-empt concerns about Trump's apparent unwillingness to challenge Russian President Vladimir Putin directly.

He also vowed to continue "to take real actions to push back, to reset the deterrence relationship with respect to Russian Federation".

But on Thursday, he strove to emphasize that he would work to "fix" the deal with skeptical European allies by a May 12 deadline.

If confirmed by the Senate, Pompeo said he would bolster the Iran nuclear deal, adding that fixing the 2015 agreement is in the US' best interest.

In response, the Russian embassy said in a statement that Pompeo's rhetoric was once again "unfounded accusations of Russia's meddling in USA electoral processes", earlier made by US legislators. He's also spoken to all eight living former secretaries - including Hillary Clinton, whom he famously criticized over the 2012 attack on US facilities in Benghazi, Libya.

Pompeo, now Trump's CIA chief, tread carefully when confronted with several of the president's controversial and undiplomatic statements, focusing instead on his plans to rebuild a depleted agency and restore its influence.
