Kathua: Bar association withdraws offer to contest accused's case for free

A day earlier, the BJP chose to hand over the resignations of its two ministers - whose presence at a rally in support of the accused arrested in connection with rape-and-murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua triggered a row - to the Chief Minister.

Both Ganga and Singh had participated in a rally on March 1 after the crime branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police had arrested the nephew of a caretaker of a "Devisthan" (temple) in connection with the kidnapping and rape of the little girl.

In a heart-wrenching incident that shook the collective conscience of India, an 8-year-old girl from Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir was kidnapped and raped repeatedly before being murdered brutally inside a temple.

After the meeting, Works Minister and senior PDP leader Naeem Ahkar, who is also the government spokesperson, "appreciated" the BJP support in the handling of the case which had caused fissures in the alliance.

The BJP on Saturday accepted the resignation of the two ministers but said their unwise move to go and pacify people rallying for suspects of rape and murder of a minor was "mistaken for trying to shield the accused".

On Saturday, the BJP, one of the ruling alliance partners in the state, had handed over to the chief minister the resignations of its two ministers.

She said the unfortunate incident changed the discourse and brought the people of the state and the rest of the country together. "It was sheer indiscretion on their part", he said.

"We appreciate our alliance partner who helped us in this case...they made the two ministers resign in the case".

The chief minister said that she was in constant touch with BJP president Amit Shah and Madhav as well as Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

"The resignation was to address the fears of not only its ally PDP and the people of Jammu and Kashmir but also the entire nation", said Mr. Madhav.

According to reports, the two BJP ministers had gone to the place of agitation at Rasana in Kathua and had attended a meeting in support of the accused to demand a CBI probe in the matter.

Both the BJP MinistersChader Prakash Ganga and Choudhary Lal Singh resigned from the Mehbooba Mufti government after facing criticism for attending a rally in support of Kathua rape accused. They tried to give communal colour to a heinous crime.
