Valencia did manage to halve the deficit three minutes from time, Ousmane Dembele carelessly bringing down Jose Gaya for a penalty which Dani Parejo slotted beneath Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Valencia were one point ahead of fourth-placed Real Madrid and a win would go a long way in their quest to finish third for the first time since 2012.

Daniel Parejo pulled a goal for the visitors from the penalty spot in the closing moments, but that couldn't stop Barca sealing a win that stretches their lead over Atletico Madrid at the top of the table to 14 points.

Valencia are among the sides to have troubled Barca this season, having coming within eight minutes of beating them in December before the sides drew 1-1. Soler played in Rodrigo Moreno but Ter Stegen made up for his mistake by pushing the shot onto the bar. Coutinho was again the provider when his 51st-minute corner was headed home at the near post by Umtiti.

Valencia played well, but for all their youthful verve they do not have the same talent or experience as a Barca side who beat them home and away in the Copa del Rey semi-finals.

Valencia coach Marcelino is wary of a backlash against Barcelona. We knew that the fans were angry and we were also hurting. This is the most important thing. We're sorry for what happened.

"We are going there with ambition, but what happened in the Champions League surely won't leave any negative repercussions".

"The sensation is that we have failed, that we have disappointed the supporters but we have to look forward and not lose sight of what we can still achieve this season".

Valverde admitted that Messi was devastated by the loss although he urged the five-time Ballon d'Or victor to put the disappointment behind him and do his utmost to ensure that they win La Liga and Copa del Rey titles. Atletico Madrid is the only other club with fewer than three losses, but fell 16 points back with six (seven for Atletico) games remaining.
