5th anniversary of Boston Marathon Bombing, memorial held

At 2:49 p.m., the moment the first bomb exploded, the city observed a moment of silence and the bell rang at the Old South Church.

On Sunday night, just hours before the 2018 Boston Marathon, elite race sponsor John Hancock announced that Jordan Hasay, the top returning American woman from 2017, has withdrawn from this year's race.

When we spoke to Hasay on Friday, she said her foot was "doing great" and that she had not missed a workout since withdrawing from the World Half Marathon Championships on March 24 with a tight plantar. In fall, she made it two-for-two in A+ marathon runs with a third place, 2:20:57 effort in Chicago-the second-fastest time ever recorded by an American woman.

An American woman hasn't won the Boston Marathon since Lisa Larsen Rainsberger in 1985. She was also second to Rose Chelimo in the World Track and Field Championships marathon and fourth in NY.

Huddle has been a success at shorter distances, although her only marathon result was a third-place finish at NY in 2016.Flanagan, 36, missed last year's race with an injury but won at NY with extra rest.

Although Huddle's time in her marathon debut was on 2:28:13 she has the competitive temperament to make her second attempt at the distance even more memorable.

Five years after the bombings, Boston is strong.

Both gathered momentum from Boston, with Kirui going on to take the world title in London and his American opponent, the London 2012 10,000m silver medallist, earning a first marathon win in Chicago.

Kirui also won the world marathon crown with Ethiopia's Tamirat Tola second and boasting a 2:04:06 clocking from Dubai in January, where he was third.Ethiopians Lelisa Desisa, the 2013 and 2015 Boston champion, and Lemi Berhanu, the 2016 Boston victor, could also threaten for the title.
