McGrath said she has been treated for decades for Graves disease, which is a thyroid condition.

"It will not surprise those who know her that Barbara Bush has been a rock in the face of her failing health, worrying not for herself - thanks to her abiding faith - but for others", the statement said. "Focusing on the family is the best place to start to make this country more literate, and I still feel that being more literate will help us solve so numerous other problems facing our society", she wrote in her 1994 memoir. She and George H.W. Bush married when she was 19 and while he was a young naval aviator.

Maine Medical Center President and CEO Rich Petersen released a statement saying, "Maine Medical Center and our children's hospital that is so honored to bear the name of First Lady Barbara Bush, is deeply saddened to learn of today's news.
