Kentucky governor says remarks about teacher protest, sexual assault were misunderstood

"I guarantee you somewhere today, a child was physically harmed or ingested poison because they were home alone because a single parent didn't have any money to take care of them", he said, adding that "some were introduced to drugs for the first time because they were vulnerable and left alone".

But, he said, "The responsibility for communicating things falls on the person, in large measure, who's doing the speaking. We're in this together".

At least 39 school districts in Kentucky had shut down on Friday as teachers traveled to the Capitol asking legislators to override Bevin's veto of state budget and tax reform bills.

House Minority Floor Leader Rocky Adkins, D-Sandy Hook, said in a statement that while Bevin claims there was a misunderstanding, "the people of Kentucky heard loud and clear what he said and today's video shows he still does not comprehend why so many were understandably upset".

In a rare off-the-cuff interview with reporters in Frankfort on Friday evening, Gov. Matt Bevin (R-Kentucky) said teachers who called in sick to protest put children's lives in danger.

Protesters succeeded in their efforts and legislators overturned Bevin's budget and tax vetoes on the final day of the 2018 legislative session.

Just hours after the New York Knicks beat the Cleveland Cavaliers , head coach Jeff Hornacek was relieved of his duties. The decision was handed down in light of a shaky record of 60-104 in two seasons since taking over in the position.

"I think he's gotten so much heat that he had to say something", Cooper said.

Governor Bevin voiced his frustrations for what he believes is a disregard for what is best for children. The Office of the Attorney General fights every day to protect our children and has arrested a record number of predators and human traffickers.

Teachers from across Kentucky gathered in the state Capitol to rally for increased funding for education on Friday.

Bevin said he has several family members who are public school teachers and said the issue is "near and dear" to him.

"The statements made by Governor Bevin yesterday insinuating that Kentucky teachers are somehow responsible for sexual assault, drug addiction, and neglect is reprehensible and repugnant".

"This is the example that we want to send to our children, really?" "The Kentucky Senate Democratic Caucus condemns these types of demeaning and degrading statements directed at our teachers and public employees by the Governor". "It was not my intent whatsoever", the governor said. "As a mother, suggesting children were abused as a prop for his political rhetoric is disturbing and absurdly in poor taste".
