'Mission Accomplished' in Syria, Trump declares

"A perfectly executed strike", Trump tweeted after U.S., French and British warplanes and ships launched more than 100 missiles almost unopposed by Syrian air defences. "Thank you to France and the United Kingdom for their wisdom and the power of their fine military".

Haley said the three USA goals for accomplishing its mission are making sure chemical weapons are not used in a way that could harm US national interests, defeating the Islamic State group and having a good vantage point to watch what Iran is doing.

US, British and French forces hit Syria with more than 100 missiles in the early hours of Saturday in the first coordinated Western strikes against the Damascus government, targeting what they said were chemical weapons sites in retaliation for a suspected poison
gas attack.

According to General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Friday's missiles struck a Damascus scientific research center, a chemical weapons storage facility, and a separate chemical weapons and equipment storage facility and command post near Homs. "At the end of the strike mission, all our aircraft safely returned to their bases".

"There is still a residual element of the Syrian program that is out there", McKenzie said, adding, "I'm not going to say they're going to be unable to continue to conduct a chemical attack in the future".

A US official said that while top aides such as Defense Secretary Jim Mattis had persuaded Trump to avoid the tougher action the president initially wanted, arguing that that would have risked escalation with Assad ally Russian Federation, the administration is no closer to crafting a comprehensive strategy on the war in Syria.

"Last year, the focus was on the delivery", Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said Saturday.

Experts warned the strikes could escalate tensions with Russian Federation and Iran if any of their troops became casualties in the retaliatory attack.

Though officers mentioned the singular goal was Assad's chemical weapons functionality, his air drive, together with helicopters he allegedly has used to drop chemical weapons on civilians, had been spared.

Russian Federation and Iran called the use of force by the United States and its French and British allies a "military crime" and "act of aggression". The resolution did not pass.

In an announcement, Trump said the attack was underway in retaliation for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's alleged use of chemical weapons on rebel-held areas of the country. "We are prepared to sustain this pressure, if the Syrian regime is foolish enough to test our will".

While there appears to be no immediate alternative to the so-called Geneva Process that would lead to a political transition in Syria, several senior USA officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, insisted it has failed and it was time to rethink. The NATO alliance gave its full backing; NATO Secretary-Normal Jens Stoltenberg mentioned in Brussels that the assault was about guaranteeing that chemical weapons can't be used with impunity.

A global chemical warfare watchdog group, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, said its fact-finding mission would go on as planned in Douma.
