Surat: 11-yr-old girl's mutilated body discovered, sexual assault suspected

Police have registered a case under sections 302 (Punishment for murder), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), and 376 (Punishment for rape), and under provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) against unidentified.

After a eight-year-old in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua who was drugged and raped repeatedly before being murdered, a similar incident has been reported in Surat.

The Surat police have not been able to establish the identity of the girl in more than a week after the discovery of her body.

On Sunday, Surat police Commissioner Satish Sharma sought people's help in finding the identity of the girl.

Sharma also said that photos and all available details of the deceased girl has been sent to all the Superintendent of Police (SPs) of the state to identify the victim.

The body of the 11-year-old was on April 6 by the police at a ground in Surat's Bhestan area but she has not yet been identified.

Massive protest in Delhi against Kathua, Unnao gangrapes
The incidents which have been in public discussion the past two days would be considered shameful by any civilised society. She said a sense of justice had been reinforced in the state and urged " New Delhi to wake up to the Kashmir cauldron".

The body of the girl was from Pandesara in Surat.

As there are no signs of struggle available at the site from where the body was recovered, police believe that she could have been killed somewhere else and then dumped at the place.

Police have announced a reward of Rs 20,000 for anyone coming forward to give information about the girl. "We will ensure justice for the girl". Disturbingly, the body had nearly 86 injury marks on it, including some on her private parts, ANI reported. "We are focusing on Odisha and West Bengal, as she is likely to be from either of the two states", he said, adding that so far police have scanned data of 8,000 missing children. "Samples have been taken for forensic test to ascertain whether she was drugged or not".

The government has been targeted by the Opposition, along with the civil society, over the rape cases in Kathua and Unnao - where an 18-year-old was allegedly gangraped by a local MLA and his accomplices.

Amidst the huge outrage in the country over high profile rape cases of Kathua and Unnao, India just witnessed yet another gruesome rape case with an 11 year-old minor raped and tortured to death.
