Aguero has knee surgery; return uncertain

Manchester City's Argentinian striker Sergio Aguero reacts during the English FA Cup fifth round football match between Wigan Athletic and Manchester City at the DW Stadium in Wigan, northwest England, on February 19, 2018.

Manchester City's top scorer Sergio Aguero is unlikely to play again this season after undergoing a knee operation.

Aguero has scored 30 times in all competitions for newly crowned Premier League champions City despite recently spending a month on the sidelines with a knee problem.

Aguero has had keyhole surgery after being troubled by a knee issue for the last five weeks. "Fully motivated to get back soon to the field", Aguero said.

City wrapped up their title run on Sunday following United's loss to West Brom and a previous victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Having seen City win the Premier League with five games to spare at the weekend, the 29-year-old made a decision to have the operation immediately in order to give him enough time to recover ahead of the tournament.

Following his lay-off he returned to action as a late substitute in the derby defeat to Manchester United on April 7, when he was hurt in a controversial challenge from Ashley Young that went unpunished.

Reports state that Aguero will be out for around a month, which means he is likely to miss City's final five Premier League games with the champions aiming to set new records for the number of points, goals and games won in a single season.
