Gas prices hit levels not seen since 2015

The possibility of US sanctions against Iran and another sponsor of the Syrian government, Russia, is driving up the price of crude oil, which increased by more than $5 last week. Prices are expected to fall back down after Labor Day.

Including the change in gas prices in Tacoma during the past week, prices were 33.7 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 19.1 cents per gallon higher than a month ago.

It's the highest tally in 995 days, with diesel prices rising 3 cents to hit $3 per gallon Monday.

GasBuddy.com, which surveys 170 gas outlets in Chattanooga, said today that local prices at the pump rose 3.5 cents per gallon to $2.45 per gallon for regular gasoline.

The average price in the metro Albany area Monday was $2.609 a gallon, according to AAA-The Auto Club Group, an increase of 5.6 cents a gallon over last week.

States with the highest average gasoline prices: California ($3.55), Hawaii ($3.48), Alaska ($3.22), Washington ($3.20), Nevada ($3.11), OR ($3.09), Utah ($2.97), Pennsylvania ($2.94), Idaho ($2.93) and NY ($2.80). Despite the increase, SC still ranks among the least expensive states for gas prices in the country.

There were media reports that Tuesday's NA special session to elect the PM would not be convened in the parliament building. On April 14, Armenia's ruling Republican Party nominated Serzh Sargsyan for the post of prime minister.

That means, "the reasons gas prices rise will shrink", DeHaan said.

"Ultimately, (the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) bears much of the responsibility for cutting oil production in 2017, leaving USA oil inventories at far lower levels than a year ago".

"The seasonal surge at gas pumps is in full motion, causing the most dreaded time of year for fearful motorists, especially of what may still be coming", he said.

Oil prices edged higher last week following new concerns about tension in the Middle East, with military strikes against Syria. Let's just hope we don't go to extra innings. Prices traditionally start their seasonal rise in mid-February as refiners begin maintenance that enables them to transition to producing more expensive summer-blend gasoline.

"That could be very close to what we expect this time around", DeHaan said.
