Kathua rape case: Accused ready for narco tests

The Crime Branch of the Jammu and Kashmir Police probed the case and filed the main chargesheet against seven persons and a separate chargesheet against a juvenile accused in a court in Kathua district last week.

The Court also directed that adequate security be provided to the victim's family, lawyer Deepika S Rajawat and advocate Talib Hussain, who is assisting in the matter.

Eight, including a juvenile, have been accused of holding the girl in captivity for a week inside "Devisthan", a small temple in Rasana village about 90km from Kathua, sedating her and sexually assaulting her repeatedly before killing her in January.

The Supreme Court Monday sought the views of the Jammu and Kashmir government on transferring the trial in the case of the eight-year-old gang rape and murder victim from Kathua to Chandigarh.

The top court has also agreed to hear the petition at 2 pm on Monday.

The rape and murder of the eight-year-old sparked statewide protests - and counter protests by the Hindu Ekta Manch against the arrest of the accused - with several groups demanding an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The victim's father had moved the Supreme Court after his lawyer, Deepika Singh Rajawat, claimed threat to her life.

The UN Security Council is now holding an emergency session on Syria at Russia's request on Friday. Despite the Kremlin's stern words, few expect Russian Federation to seek confrontation in Syria .

Meanwhile, an accused of the Kathua rape and murder case, while exiting from the court said the truth will come out after the narco tests. He also sought safety and security from the court in his plea.

There was the heavy police presence at the Kathua complex following the tension on April 9 when members of the local bar association did not allow the Crime Branch to submit its charge sheet in the case.

The father of the victim, through his counsels, pleaded that he was not expecting a fair in Kathua given the protests by the lawyers there in support of the accused.

"Be that as it may, we do not intend to enter into this sphere (transfer of case to CBI) at this stage", the bench said, noting the submission of the victim's father.

Relatives of the victim present outside the Kathua court accused the media of ignoring extensive reportage of this heinous crime for almost three months.

Lawyers took to the streets shouting slogans and trying to block the road outside the court where the charge sheets have been filed.

The minor victim had disappeared from near her home in a village near Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir on January 10. "We just want justice for my daughter", she said. In Unnao in Lucknow, A 17-year-old girl alleged that she was raped by a BJP MLA.
