Ford Performance claims the three-door will sprint from nought to 100km/h in just 6.7 seconds, 0.3-seconds faster than the 134kW/240Nm auto it will replace.

While Australian touring cars may seem a world away from our BTCC, perhaps the best news to take from this is a sustained commitment from Ford to motorsport.

On top of that, the Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker announced Tuesday, April 17 that the Mustang was the planet's best-selling sports coupe for the third consecutive year. "It's great to be back in the Ford fold, and we'll continue to ensure that we give Ford - and its millions of fans - something to cheer about". The Mustang had a pent-up demand in China with more than 18,000 people signing up for a test drive the first week it was available in the spring of 2015. "It could only be found on TV or the Internet, and now it rolls down streets from Beijing to São Paulo".

Ford's already working with two teams to homologate the auto.

Initial testing of the Mustang stock vehicle is still underway and it will be formally submitted to NASCAR for approval this summer. The public unveiling of the race auto will "follow soon, " Ford says.

The new Ford Mustang will make its Australian track debut at the first round of the Supercars Series in March 2019 at the Adelaide 500.
