Reuben Foster Will Not Take Part In 49ers Off-Season Drills

The offseason program is the de facto start of the new season for players.

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster appears for his arraignment at the Santa Clara County Hall of Justice in San Jose, Calif. on April 12, 2018, where he answered to felony domestic violence and weapon charges.

"Our focus is on holding accountable those who hurt their intimate partners", prosecutor Kevin Smith said in the release. "We will continue to follow this serious matter", the statement read. After an infamous domestic-violence incident involving former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice, the National Football League granted Commissioner Roger Goodell authority to give players a baseline six-game suspension for domestic violence allegations, even without a conviction, with the discretion to decrease or lengthen the time based on the circumstances of a case.

The 49ers released a statement attributed to chief executive officer Jed York, general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan on Sunday night saying that Foster will not be participating in team activities as he goes through the legal process stemming from his February 11 arrest.

"The 49ers organization is aware of today's disturbing charges regarding Reuben Foster".

49ers' cornerback Richard Sherman also attended the brief court hearing, telling reporters, "I'm here to support a teammate". In a release from the district attorney's office last week, officials said Foster, 24, physically attacked his live-in girlfriend, leaving her bruised and with a ruptured eardrum. She told responding officers that Foster dragged her by her hair, physically threw her out of the house, and punched her in the head eight to 10 times, according to the DA's report.

The 49ers drafted Foster 31st overall a year ago after questions about his health and character caused him to drop from being a possible top 10 pick. He has been charged with second-degree marijuana possession.

Regardless of whether Foster is convicted of any charges, he could still face discipline from the NFL.

Former prosecutor and legal analyst Steven Clark told KPIX 5 one big question mark is whether Foster's girlfriend will testify against him in court.

Either case could lead to discipline from the National Football League, up to and including suspension.

Foster delivered on the field, ranking second on the team with 72 tackles in 10 games as a rookie and looking like a key part of San Francisco's defensive future.
