South Korea says officials may visit North Korea ahead of summit

"Astana looks forward to serious outcomes of the forthcoming inter-Korean Summit and hopes the top-level meeting will become a breakthrough in relations between the two countries and help ease tensions in the Korean peninsula".

The Munha Ilbo report said one possible way of ending the conflict could involve reverting the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone that bisects the two Koreas to its original state. "If they can't, they should meet again to sign the treaty".

"The complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is the most urgent task that lies before us and a task we must complete peacefully", the president said while attending a Buddhist service held for the success of his upcoming summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

No peace treaty has been signed to replace the 1953 armistice that ended the Korean War, and the US and North Korea have been at loggerheads since formal hostilities ceased.

"Given the historical importance of the upcoming summits [inter-Korean Summit and the DPRK-U.S. Summit], the President of the Republic of Korea can not leave the country".

Seoul has said the peace treaty should be signed by the two Koreas, guaranteed by the USA and China with support from Russian Federation and Japan, and later approved by the UN.

Last week, Secretary of State nominee CIA Director Mike Pompeo said North Korea should not expect rewards from talks until it takes irreversible steps to give up its nuclear weapons.

Mr Moon hopes that his summit with Mr Kim can lay the foundation for a deal on denuclearisation between Washington and Pyongyang at the following summit between Mr Kim and U.S. president Donald Trump in May or early June. A successful summit between Moon and Kim could pave the way for a meeting between Kim and U.S. President Donald Trump - the first between a sitting American president and a North Korean leader.

A follow-up high-level meeting to discuss the agenda will be held on Thursday or Friday.
