USA to announce new economic sanctions on Russian Federation

Haley made the remarks in an interview on CBS, saying the Treasury Department would announce the new sanctions and insisted the USA has sent "a strong message" about the use of chemical weapons.

"The US mission has not changed - the president has been clear that he wants US forces to come home as quickly as possible", White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said.

President Donald Trump halted additional economic sanctions against Russia Monday just a day after U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said on CBS' Face the Nation that they "will be coming".

While insisting the action taken early Saturday morning in Syria was "a very strong attack on the chemical weapons program", Haley hit back on more hawkish critics who argue the USA didn't go far enough because it did not change the balance of power in the long-running Syrian civil war.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley arrives for a UN Security Council meeting, at United Nations Headquarters in NY, on April 14, 2018. "Secretary Mnuchin will be announcing those on Monday, if he hasn't already". And they will go directly to any sort of companies that were dealing with equipment related to Assad and chemical weapons used.

Preliminary plans to further punish Russian Federation for its support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his government drew anxiety from the White House. "And so I think everyone is going to feel it at this point", Haley said on the show. "But be very clear, if we leave, when we leave, it will be because we know that everything is moving forward".

The United States also imposed sanctions on 24 Russians earlier this month over what USA intelligence agencies have said was interference in the US presidential election.

Speaking to Morning Edition, Public Radio International reporter Charles Maynes, who is based in Russian Federation, says the sanctions imposed thus far are having some impact in Russian Federation.

"What (Trump) has done is talked to our allies and said they need to step up more".

The administration characterized Haley's comments as a misstatement and informed the Russian embassy that sanctions were not coming.

The WH is reporting that Trump would not approve any additional sanctions without another triggering event by Russian Federation, and characterized Haley's comments as a misstatement.

A Washington Post report suggested Trump had been furious with aides over the recent decision to expel 60 Russian diplomats, believing each European country - rather than Europe as a whole - would match that figure.
