Harley Quinn's Birds Of Prey Spin-Off Movie Just Made History

Yan reportedly put together a stellar presentation for her vision of the film.

The announcement confirms that a movie with Robbie as Harley Quinn in the lead role is just as important to Warner Bros and DC Entertainment as the sequel to Suicide Squad, in which Robbie also is likely to star. The Suicide Squad and The Wolf of Wall Street star was reported to have made the hiring of a female director for the movie a top priority.

Cathy Yan has been tapped to direct a Birds of Prey feature film for Warner Bros. and DC.

Warner Bros. and DC settled on the script for the project almost two years ago. Yan got the job over numerous well established male directors, and because she is taking this giant leap with just one small-budget indie movie under her belt.

Production on the untitled tentpole is expected to begin late this year or in early 2019. Variety's report refers to Robbie's Harley as a "crazed supervillain", which is accurate, but also means this news of a movie based on an all-female superhero team is leading with the reveal of the villain. The script is now being handled by Christina Hodson, who just completed the Transformers prequel Bumblebee and is also writing the new Batgirl movie.

Yan would come into the Harley Quinn/Birds of Prey project after her most recent film, Dead Pigs, won Sundance's World Cinema Dramatic Award for Ensemble Acting.

Yan is be the third female chosen to direct a DC Comics film, after Patty Jenkins of the "Wonder Woman" franchise and Ava Duvernay, who was recently announced as director of a "New Gods" movie. The other Harley Quinn films are still under construction.

Harley Quinn may have been officially named the most popular Halloween costume of 2016 and also helped earn Suicide Squad its Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, but soon enough, the antihero will be making history in an even more impressive way.
