'Very Ugly Precedent': Iran's President Slams US-Led Missile Attack on Syria

He said that the country must make change to become an executive presidency.

Among the key things the government still has to do before early elections is legislate final laws regulating the procedures and principles of presidential elections.

Erdogan said he made the decision after speaking to the head of the nationalist MHP party, Devlet Bahceli, who a day earleir had floated the prospect of early polls.

The polls will be the first since a referendum previous year that transformed Turkey's parliamentary democracy into a powerful executive presidency and handed Erdogan sweeping new powers.

In a telephone conversation with Russia's President Vladimir Putin on Monday, President Rouhani said the US-led missile attack on Syria had revealed Washington's concern about the terrorists being "dislodged from an important region like Eastern Ghouta".

Bahceli told MHP lawmakers that the elections - which are due to be held at the same time next year - should in fact be held on August 26, 2018.

TRT World's Caitlin McGee is in Ankara for the updates on President Erdogan's announcement of snap elections.

The main opposition Republican Peoples Party, or CHP, said it was ready for the elections, but called for the lifting of the State of Emergency, which was implemented following the 15 July 2016 coup attempt and renewed in parliament on Wednesday.

Earlier, President Erdogan held phone talks with leaders of several countries.

MHP leader since 1997, Bahceli is seen as a kingmaker in Turkish politics.

He prompted the 2002 snap polls that brought Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP) to power. The AK Party has ruled Turkey ever since.

Rouhani added that fighting terrorism, ending the war in Syria and establishing security in the region topped the agenda of the recent meeting of the Iranian, Russian and Turkish presidents in Ankara.
