New York nanny convicted in stabbing deaths of two young children

After killing the children with a kitchen knife in the bathtub of their Upper West Side apartment on October 25, 2012, Ortega stabbed herself in the neck in front of their mother, Marina Krim, and the victims' then 3-year-old sister, in a failed suicide attempt.

During closing arguments, defense attorney Valerie Van Leer-Greenberg said that mental illness "does not announce itself like a bad cough or a limp-sometimes it sneaks up and nestles in before anyone takes notice". Ortega them stabbed herself in the neck in an apparent suicide attempt, police said.

Jurors were charged with deliberating whether the 55-year-old nanny intentionally killed the children in her care- or if she had descended into such a severe state of psychosis that she didn't know what she was doing. However, prosecutors argued that she was aware of what she was doing and understood "every stab, every slash".

The day of the crime, Marina Krim came home after taking her then-3-year-old daughter, Nessie, to a swim class and opened her bathroom door to find "the bloodied, lifeless bodies of her 6-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son ... their eyes open, covered in blood", Assistant District Attorney Courtney Groves said in opening statements last month.

Ortega will be sentenced on May 14 and faces life in prison.

Prosecutors argued Ortega was motivated by money troubles and workload conflicts with the children's mother. "They are dead. I just saw my kids dead'".

"They still had this flawless skin and these long eyelashes", Kevin Krim said.

The father's testimony brought tears to the jurors and to people seated in the courtroom gallery. "They had like sandy brown hair".

A three-year-old girl who was playing with her father's handgun accidentally shot her pregnant mother in IN, police said. The father, Menzo Brazien, was taken into police custody on a preliminary charge of child endangerment.

Insanity defenses rarely succeed in NY, where proving mental illness is not enough to find a defendant not responsible for a crime.

"I was destroyed", Krim testified.

Prosecutors say the parents of two children stabbed to death by their nanny at their NY home have "lived through the worst nightmare any parent could endure".

The couple started the Lulu and Leo Fund, which aims to support innovative art programs for children.

The children's mother wrote on Instagram after the verdict she loves Lulu and Leo.

"You two never made it to the top but I'm up here now for the first time, in peace, on top of the world, remembering another lifetime and thinking of you", she wrote.
