President Kovind calls Kathua incident 'shameful' for Indian society

President Ram Nath Kovind Wednesday said that none of the girls should go through brutality and it was everyone's responsibility to ensure that they get a safe environment to live. "The occurrence of such barbaric incidents even 70 years after Independence is shameful", he said, referring to the reports of the brutalisation and killing of the minor girl child in Kathua.The 8-year-old girl was abducted near her house in Rasana village of Kathua district while she was grazing ponies on January 10.

The President added the success of a society lay in the kind of protection it provides to its children. "I feel the smile of children is the most attractive thing in the world".

The 6th Convocation of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) was held at its Auditorium here on Wednesday. Across the country, our children are being subjected to heinous crime.

"Are we developing such a society where our mother, sisters and daughters are getting their right of justice, equality and freedom as enshrined by the Constitution", he asked.

Before the President's address, Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti also condemned the Kathua rape and murder case.

The President attended a civic reception organised in his honour on the Amar Mahal lawns in Jammu city.

Later Governor N.N Vohra, hosted a Banquet at the Raj Bhavan for Ram Nath Kovind, President of India and First Lady, Smt.

He will be also meeting the Chief Justice, Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar and other Judges of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court over breakfast here.
