Alabama executes man, 83, oldest in modern USA history

US 11 Circuit of Appeals Judge Robert Vance Sr. was in his home in Mountain Brook, Alabama, nine days before Christmas, when he opened a package Moody had mailed to him, authorities said, adding the blast instantly killed Vance and severely injured his wife, Helen.

According to the Death Penalty Information Center, a group that specializes in tracking capital punishment, Moody, 83, will be the oldest inmate killed in the modern history of the US.

Moody, who has spent more than 20 years on death row, has maintained his innocence and his lawyers have not yet used his age in appeals seeking to halt the execution.

Two other mail bombs were intercepted and defused before they exploded, including one at the office of Jacksonville, Florida, office of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

Moody's lawyer argued the transfer to an Alabama prison was illegal and he should first serve his federal sentence.

Lawyers for Moody questioned the Supreme Court on Thursday to save Moody's living predicated out of the national court system to rsquo & Alabama;s.

Moody was convicted by a federal court in 1991 to seven life terms plus 400 years.

Vance said he had to make peace with his father's death, but said he has no doubt that Moody is guilty.

"The execution coming up doesn't add anything to that", Bob Vance said. Moody was pronounced dead at 8:42 p.m.

Moody did not give a final statement. That was the same court on which his victim sat almost 30 years ago. Moody's appeals finally came to a rightful end.
