EPA inspector general to investigate Scott Pruitt's security detail on trips

The GAO also said the EPA ran afoul of the Antideficiency Act, a measure prohibiting federal agencies from spending government funds in advance or in excess of an appropriation.

On Wednesday, White House Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney said he would investigate Pruitt's decision to spend $43,000 to build a private, secure phone booth for his office.

Pruitt's full-time security team still accompanied him on the trips to Oklahoma, with their travel expenses still borne by taxpayers.

Elkins told Whitehouse that the audit of the use of security detail on the personal trips would be reviewed separate from the IG's current review of the travel and security concerns.

EPA confirmed that Pruitt flew on a companion pass.
