Remembering Earle Bruce: Five Treasured Memories At Ohio State

Former Ohio State football coach Earle Bruce has died at his home in central Ohio.

We've lost a giant in the Ohio State community with the passing of Earle Bruce. He finished his college head coaching career with stints at Northern Iowa (1988) and Colorado State (1989-92) before some coaching stops in Arena Football.

It's a classy message from the MI coach.

Coach Bruce was the patriarch of the Ohio State program after Hayes' death in 1987 and he was revered by Urban Meyer, whose first collegiate coaching position was as a graduate assistant for Bruce during the 1986 and 1987 seasons. He was diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimer's disease in August 2017.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Coach Earle Bruce, early this morning, Friday, April 20. He ranks 10th among Big Ten Conference coaches in number of league championships won.

Rest in peace, Coach Bruce.

After graduation, Bruce worked his way up through the OH high school ranks, leading the legendary Massillon Washington program to 10-0 seasons in 1964 and '65 before returning to Columbus to rejoin Hayes as a full-fledged assistant. Bruce succeeded Woody Hayes as Buckeyes football coach and had an 81-26-1 record.

He came out of retirement to coach the Barnstormers in Des Moines for the 2003 season. The email included a touching quote from Meyer.

Bruce's all-time coaching career spanned six decades and 45 years at the high school, collegiate and professional levels.
