Trump Attorney Cohen Drops Dossier Lawsuits Against Fusion GPS, BuzzFeed

Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's personal lawyer, said on Wednesday that he was dropping his defamation lawsuits against Buzzfeed and Fusion GPS.

Though the lawsuits generated a great deal of press at the time they were filed, Cohen's legal team took months to make procedural steps to move the cases forward in court. "But given the events that have unfolded, and the time, attention, and resources needed to prosecute these matters, we have dismissed the matters, despite their merits".

Steele's reports about his research formed the infamous dossier, which has not been fully corroborated but which describes an alleged conspiracy between Trump's campaign for president and Russia's operation of interference and "active measures" against the 2016 election.

Cohen had not brought a case against Christopher Steele, an ex-British spy who wrote the dossier as a contractor for Fusion GPS.

The embattled lawyer isn't conceding anything about the substance of what was detailed in the dossier, which is unverified, but says he has too much else on his plate to proceed now that he is dealing with a federal court case in NY.

"The lawsuits against BuzzFeed over the Steele dossier have never been about the merits of our decision to publish it", Matt Mittenthal, the director of communications for the website, told The Daily Caller News Foundation. Federal Bureau of Investigation agents raided his office, home and hotel room earlier in April.

Cohen sued the news organization, its editor in chief Ben Smith, editors Miriam Elder and March Schoofs, and reporter Ken Bensinger this past January, and filing a separate lawsuit against Fusion GPS. "If there's one thing Democrats and Republicans agree on today, it's that the dossier was an important part of the government's investigation into potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation".

He unequivocally denied ever visiting the Czech capital but new reports say special counsel Robert Mueller has evidence suggesting he did.

The longtime Trump insider is under federal investigation for wire fraud, bank fraud and campaign finance fraud over his handling of a payment to one of the alleged mistresses, Stormy Daniels.

"The way I put it is that she is free", Stris said Thursday.

With court battles on several fronts, Cohen is under intense legal pressure. It alleges that Cohen was involved with Russian efforts to sway the election toward President Donald Trump.

He said he told the panels that he never engaged with, was paid by or communicated with anyone representing the Russian government, or anyone else, about hacking or interfering with the USA election, hacking the Democratic Party or creating fake news stories to assist the Trump campaign or to damage the Hillary Clinton campaign.
