Trump hails Kim's nuclear move as 'good news' for the world

Trump earlier said the summit would take place "sometime in May or early June".

Trump tweeted: "North Korea has agreed to suspend all Nuclear Tests and close up a major test site".

North Korea has reportedly agreed to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, pleasing the Trump administration, but there may be a disconnect when it comes to what exactly this means, North Korean state media reports indicate. "Look forward to our Summit", Trump said on Twitter.

The North Korean leader will meet on Friday in the week ahead with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

"The North will shut down a nuclear test site in the country's northern side to prove the vow to suspend nuclear test", Yonhap reported.

Pyongyang - which past year carried out its most powerful nuclear test to date and launched intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching the United States - has long insisted that it needs them to defend against a U.S. invasion.

"We have made a series of promises and extended financial support in exchange for (North Korea) giving up nuclear test sites among other things, but tests continued", Aso, who doubles as finance minister, told reporters in Washington after attending the Group of 20 meeting of finance chiefs and central bankers.

And AFP reports that Japan's defense minister has insisted that Japan is not satisfied, . saying North Korea did not mention the abandonment of its short-range and medium-range ballistic missiles. Still, the announcement should add to the momentum building for President Donald Trump's planned summit with Kim.

The communication channel was also used by Roh Moo-hyun, the successor to Kim Dae-jung, until the conservative Lee Myung-bak took over in 2008, Seoul officials said.

Hence, from the point of view of political elites in Pyongyang, the timing of the announcement shows it is a North Korean initiative and nothing to do with pressure being put on by America or South Korea.

N.Korea Suspends Nuclear and Long-Range Missile Tests
Mr Trump welcomed the announcement and said he was looking forward to the summit. He attended the latest high-level inter-Korean talks as the chief delegate.

Kim said, according to KCNA, that "no nuclear test and intermediate-range and inter-continental ballistic rocket test-fire are necessary for the DPRK now, given that the work for mounting nuclear warheads on ballistic rockets was finished", referring to the country's official name of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

KCNA quoted Kim as saying that North Korea should focus on economic development now that it had achieved its aim of becoming a nuclear state. Presidential official Yoon Young-chan said in a statement that the North's decision brightens the prospects for successful talks between Seoul, Pyongyang and Washington. Kim met last month with China's president and is to meet South Korea's leader April 27.

Japanese PM also promised to maintain close cooperation with South Korea and the USA in dealing with the North's nuclear issue going forward.

The move goes some way towards meeting USA demands for denuclearisation, as Pyongyang and Washington work towards agreement on when and where Kim will meet Trump for historic talks that barely seemed possible just a few months ago.

"I don't know exactly how they'll go about it", he said.

Moon said Thursday that Kim isn't asking for the withdrawal of US troops from the Korean Peninsula as a precondition for abandoning his nuclear weapons.

Tensions eased significantly after North Korea's Kim called in a New Year's speech for lower military tensions and improved ties with South Korea.

North Korea last tested a long-range ballistic missile in November.

The professor also pointed out that North Korea had previously announced they had completed their nuclear deterrent.
