France's Mont Saint-Michel evacuated after police threatened

The French police have arrested a man after his threat to attack police at Mont-Saint-Michel prompted an evacuation of the busy tourist site, local media reported on Monday.

"I am ordering house-by-house searches to verify if the individual is still on Mont-Saint-Michel". Police described the operation as a "precaution". Their group of 32 was turned back to Paris after being blocked from reaching Mont-Saint-Michel.

An official with the national gendarme service said a visitor threatened to attack French security services while riding on one of the shuttles serving the popular site. He said the man was caught on video surveillance cameras.

A senior local official said the man then got into a fight with a cafe owner, during which he made more threats against security forces. "It's possible that the individual left the Mont with the flux of tourists", Sabathe said.

Police searched houses on the island in the northern region of Normandy, but were unable to find the inidividual, who was heard uttering threats.

The Obamas, Clintons along with the Bush family and Melania Trump attended the funeral of Barbara Bush in Houston , Texas. Across Houston , people mourned her passing and celebrated her devotion to Texas' largest city.

Hotels on the Mont were being evacuated, but its few permanent residents were being told to stay indoors.

The man, who was known to authorities for drug trafficking and for driving without a licence, was first spotted at a motorway petrol station "where he boasted of being behind the threats", the source said.

Both officials weren't authorized to be publicly named.

The exceptional evacuation of one of France's most-visited tourist sites came after a string of sporadic attacks around France in recent years targeting police, some of them fatal.
