Trudeau says it's not an easy task because so many are frightened by the mental illness stigma which they believe, makes them flawed and a failure at life.

Organizers say the goal is to show parents positive mental health is essential to a child's healthy development. MHA also has found that youth mental health is worsening.

As such, the local chapter of MHA has been working to create a teen support group to add to the trio of other support groups that are offered regularly: widow-to-widow, veterans, and Social Club for adults with disabilities. "Here, I feel like we're a family that motivates each other".

They note that the nation's jails and homeless populations are filled with people suffering from mental illness, which they called "unacceptable". A key, he says, is collaboration with many community partners. It also helps MHA by giving staff a better idea of the needs and issues that are being faced in the community.

It is hard to convince someone to get help when they do not think they need it. Listening, empathizing, agreeing, and partnering with them or others is the first step. One in 20 people live with a serious mental illness like bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder or severe depression.

The director also reminded people that mental wellness isn't a destination; it's a journey. She spoke in detail about her numerous bouts of depression and mania, which she said were sparked by postpartum depression after the birth of her first two children and the lack of treatment options available in the 1970's.
