Fox Revived 'Last Man Standing' Because They Were

All the while, titular star Roseanne Barr's been tweeting inflammatory political opinions, but FOX executives have insisted (during a conference call transcribed by Hollywood Reporter) that they made their Last Man Standing decision based exclusively upon ratings potential, not politics. The show never really delved deeply into political views. "We always felt like for whatever reason, ABC didn't really prioritize 'Last Man Standing'". "Thanks to all you guys for the support", Allen said. Fans believed the show's conservative viewpoints lead to the show's cancellation. "We just think it's a really amusing show" with general appeal, he said in announcing the network's 2018-19 schedule with fellow chairman and CEO Dana Walden. "Is there any other show in history that has not only retained its audience but has beaten most other comedies of its type that has been canceled as abruptly?" [Mike Baxter] doesn't have extreme political views.

Others, however, including The Daily Banter, argued that the decision to cancel Allen's show had nothing to do with politics and everything to do with good business practices. It wasn't really about that.

"It's a amusing show and audiences responded to it", he explained simply, saying now is the time to bring it back, after a season of dormancy, Fox having added Thursday Night Football to its arsenal.

However, he didn't believe the lasting success behind "Last Man Standing" was exclusively based on Baxter's conservative values. "And a lot of that social sentiment that you see results in online discussions about shows, I think, is part of what drives the success of the show".

Walden also shared that despite initial interest in bringing "Last Man Standing" over to Fox after its ABC cancellation, the right opportunity just wasn't there quite yet, despite growing demand from fans. We jumped on it really quickly and are thrilled to have it and think it fits into our brand of comedy in many ways better than it fit into Fox's brand of comedy.

"Rel is really a breakout comic star and his character feels very much like a Fox character", Newman said. Walden reasoned, "With Thursday Night Football, there were two fewer hours to program".

The news of "Last Man Standing" being resurrected by Fox came just days after Allen teased a possible reboot of his series on social media. "Now we get the news from Fox that it's time to get back out on that diamond - hell yes, I'm excited!"

Walden's partner, Gary Newman, also spoke up to downplay one reporter's suggestion that FOX was aiming for a "tonal shift" while stressing that, ultimately, it's all about the ratings.
