So far, 17 people have been rescued while 23 people are still missing.

A major mishap was averted on May 10 when a boat with 80 passengers caught fire near Pudipalli on the East-West Godavari border and the driver pulled the boat safely to shore.

A Dornier aircraft carrying diving teams have been sent to Rajahmundhry in Andhra Pradesh for rescue operations after a boat capsized in Godavari river on Tuesday.

About 20 people swam to safety Tuesday evening after the ferry flipped on the Godavari River but others, including a group traveling to a wedding, remained unaccounted for.

Last year, a boat accident in Vijayawada on the Krishna river claimed as many as 21 lives.

The incident occurred near Manturu in Devipatnam block of East Godavari district around 5 p.m.

Khaja, who operates the boat, surrendered before Devipatnam police. Due to sudden gales and whirl wind pools the boat lost balance and tilted one side and capsized. "I pray for the safety of those missing", the Prime Minister said. The Chief Minister directed the District Collector to deploy special teams to rescue the victims, a release said. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu also took to the micro-blogging site and called the incident "highly painful".
