Anwar hails 'new dawn for Malaysia' following release from prison

Mahathir, 92 was sworn in as the leader on Thursday, making him the world's oldest democratically elected leader.

"(In) an initial stage, maybe lasting one or two years, I will be the prime minister", Mahathir said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal CEO Council in Tokyo via a video link from Malaysia on Tuesday. "In fact, even from within the prison cell I sensed that the outrage against a corrupt regime was increasing by the day".

Anwar had been scheduled to be released from prison on June 8, but the king agreed to grant him a royal pardon for an early release.

As he left the hospital, Anwar waved at the large crowd of journalists and supporters gathered outside the facility but did not say anything to them.

The pardon, granted on the grounds that there was a miscarriage of justice, allows Anwar to re-enter politics immediately. He had been in hospital recovering from shoulder surgery.

The alliance between Mahathir - who has been prime minister before - and Anwar came after years of feud as the latter was first jailed after Mahathir dismissed him as deputy prime minister in 1998.

Anwar was freed in 2004 and cleared of the sodomy charges after Mahathir retired. "Anwar bin Ibrahim", said a statement issued by the palace.

Cracks have already emerged, with officials from Anwar's party alleging that Mahathir bulldozed the announcement of three top Cabinet posts.

The volatile relationship between the duo has dominated the country's political landscape for over three decades.

Faced with a leadership challenge, Mahathir used internal security laws to detain more than 100 opposition politicians, academics and social activists. However, he was stopped in his tracks by charges of sodomy and graft, which he denied, but for which he was jailed. After that Mr Anwar was jailed on charges of committing sodomy and abusing power.

Mahathir is the leader of the ruling alliance and Anwar's People's Justice Party (PKR) won the majority of parliamentary seats in the group.

"We are now in the process of getting into the details of the matter he suppressed during his time [as prime minister]".

Low, a friend of Najib's stepson Riza Aziz, had no official role at 1MDB but US investigators say he had considerable influence over its dealings and was often in contact with Najib.

"Until that happens, Anwar contributes as part of, not actually as the government, but (in a position) related to the government of Tun Dr Mahathir", she said while at the Pandan PKR victory celebrations at the Ampang Jaya Municipal field this evening.

Between 2009 and 2015, several decisions involving high-value investments were made through 1MDB board resolutions without detailed discussion or evaluation, the report said.

But observers had failed to gauge the depth of disgust with former leader Najib Razak, who stands accused of presiding over the plundering of a state investment fund he established.
