Lightning vs. Capitals odds, Game 3

These were not the same Washington Capitals that dominated the Tampa Bay Lightning in Games 1 and 2 in Florida, not the same team that outscored its opponent 10-4 in those games.

Fast forward to almost five years later, Cooper's Lightning now face a 2-0 series deficit to Ovechkin's Capitals in the Eastern Conference Final.

The score remains 4-1 in Tampa's favor with 3:41 left in the game.

As the Oates to Ovechkin's Hall, or the Kim Deal to his Frank Black, Backstrom has always been one of the most underrated players in the National Hockey League this side of Jake Gardiner.

"We checked. That was it", said Cooper, on the differences between the first two games and Game 3. Before that, Steven Stamkos opened scoring for the Lightning late in the first period after Braden Holtby was called for tripping.

There's an argument that they could have given him the night off on Tuesday to promote further healing with the team holding a healthy 2-0 lead series lead.

"Those guys have delivered when we've needed them", said Lightning coach Jon Cooper. "We talked about this, you've got to make them chase the game". That was a learning experience players could point to when they went to the Stanley Cup Final in 2015, but right now it's just an ugly deficit. Lightning series is set to start at 8 p.m., meaning the extra hour of service will prevent potential travel issues if the game were to go into overtime.

The Lightning's 50 postseason power-play chances trail only the Capitals (52).

"They came in here, they're desperate and they played that way", said Capitals coach Barry Trotz.

Win a fourth straight game without Nick Backstorm.

4 on 3 for the Bolts. The Capitals captain is second in goals scored behind Winnipeg's Mark Scheifele (12).

The Lightning had four All-Stars this season with Stamkos joined by right-wing Nikita Kucherov, defenseman Victor Hedman, and goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy, and all four combined to hand the Lightning a dominant 3-0 lead early in the second period.

Evgeny Kuznetsov and Lars Ellers each had a goal and two assists as six different Capitals scored. "For us to get two goals today and shut them down on the PK was big".
