TV3 secure rights to Champions League and Europa League next season

TV3 and Virgin Media will dominate Irish TV coverage of the Champions League and Europa League for the next three seasons.

BT Sport are to show the UEFA Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool live and free online.

The deal will give Virgin Media and TV3 exclusive rights to 327 European matches per season in Ireland across both competitions, along with shared rights along with public broadcaster RTÉ to 16 Tuesday night UEFA Champion League matches. But before we get to the tournament to end all tournaments, there are still two big events on the football calendar in the shape of the Europa cup final and Champions League final. A further million or so watched Manchester United's triumph over Ajax in the Europa League final.

RTÉ has first pick on Tuesday, but TV3 will show a game in the other slot and also have the option to air other fixtures.

The move by Virgin is the latest in its ever-expanding live sport portfolio which now includes the majority of the Champions League and Europa League, the Rugby World Cup, the Six Nations, the Champions Cup and United Kingdom racing.

Boeing calls WTO ruling against EU's Airbus subsidy "landmark decision"
Boeing fell less than 1 percent to $342.09 at 12:37 p.m.in NY , recovering from losses logged before the decision was issued. Airbus shares fell shortly after the WTO issued its findings and were poised to close down around 0.86 per cent.

RTÉ lost out on rights to broadcast the final, in what is being seen as a significant blow to the Montrose-based station.

"This landmark deal confirms Virgin Media as Ireland's leading connected entertainment business and is great news for TV3 viewers and Virgin Media Customers", said Pat Kiely, managing director of TV3.

Liverpool are in their first European Cup final since 2007 when they were defeated by AC Milan.

BT Sport confirmed the news earlier today that both games will be available on YouTube.
