Apple is reportedly opening its second campus in North Carolina

Apple has said it is seeking four million square feet to house 20,000 employees for a new campus to go along with its spaceship-like headquarters in California, but CEO Tim Cook later added that he didn't want to make it a "beauty contest kind of thing", referencing Amazon's very public call for applications for its HQ2. The Washington Post reported yesterday that Apple is also being pursued by Virginia to move into an area near where Apple opened its first retail store in 2001, Tysons Corner in McLean, Virginia. It is a place where Amazon is also thinking about its new campus. Apple CEO Tim Cook discussed the matter with state officials when he visited Duke University to give a commencement speech at this year's graduation ceremonies.

Apple has been searching locations from the previous various months for a new campus concentrating on technical support. Where Amazon has been overt with its plans, leading to many public subsidy offers from states, and some protests from local residents, Apple is being far more secretive and has only promised to announce new plans for its future investment in USA facilities later this year.

Meanwhile, North Carolina is still in the running, specifically the Research Triangle Park.

"We're not doing a beauty contest kind of thing", Cook said in a recent interview.

Apple said earlier this year that it planned to build a new campus somewhere in the United States for thousands of new employees. Part of that investment will go towards a new campus, located away from the company's headquarters in Cupertino, California. The current proposal calls for a bare minimum of 3,000 new jobs at the new Apple facility, with an expansion to between 5,000 to 10,000 jobs once the project is fully complete.

Apple has reportedly told economic development officials in Northern Virginia that it will need 4 million square feet of space to accommodate about 20,000 jobs.

North Carolina Speaker of the House Tim Moore did not respond to a request for comment.

There are also some connections to the company that could help Northern Virginia's chances.

North Carolina's incentive deal is said not to include any upfront grant money to the world's largest company.

The last Apple campus to break ground was its long-in-developmentApple Park.
