Thousands of doses of Ebola vaccine have arrived the Democratic Republic of Congo, as the country battles outbreak of the disease.

"We are entering a new phase of the Ebola outbreak that is now affecting three health zones, including an urban health zone", he said, adding he is anxious because Mbandaka is densely populated and at the crossroads of Equateur province.

The city is a major transportation hub with routes to the capital Kinshasa, the BBC reports.

Last year, eight people were infected and four people died after an outbreak of the disease, according to the Centres for Disease Control.

Senior World Health Organization (WHO) official, Peter Salama, said the spread to Mbandaka meant there was the potential for an "explosive increase" in cases. Ebola is spread by contact with the bodily fluids of people exhibiting symptoms. WHO says it will use the "ring vaccination" method by administering the treatment to voluntary contacts, and contacts of those contacts, besides health workers.
