Four Virginia Tech teams receive NCAA Public Recognition Award

The NCAA announced Division I Academic Progress Rates (APR) Public Recognition Awards today, recognizing teams across the country that finished with an APR in the top 10 percent in their sport.

The University of CT men's basketball, women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, men's hockey, men's tennis and women's tennis teams were honored on Wednesday with NCAA Public Recognition Awards for outstanding academic performance. The APR includes eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation, and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.

The program recorded its mark (a flawless rate of 1,000) over the course of the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 school years.

Cross country, tennis, volleyball, golf, lacrosse and gymnastics were among the Rutgers women's programs recognized, while baseball and men's cross country were cited among men's teams.

A pair of University of Arizona sports teams have earned ideal scores in the latest NCAA Academic Progress Report.

Villanova had 11 women's programs and seven men's programs cited for their academic achievement in Wednesday's announcement.

Critics point out that judging academic success and paying hefty April bonuses to administrators and coaches for keeping athletes eligible doesn't accurately measure the quality of their academic experience and can lead to other problems. "I commend these student-athletes for their full dedication to both their academics and their team". The award recognizes teams with APRs in the top 10 percent nationally in each sport. This year marks the first year in which the baseball program has been honored with a Public Recognition Award. The field hockey team, led by coach Char Morett, has received an NCAA Public Recognition Award nine times.

April is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams. The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. One point is for being academically eligible at the end of a semester, and the other is for returning to school or graduating at the start of the next semester.

APRs for all Division I teams will be released May 23.
