YouTube launches subscription music service, renames Red YouTube Premium

"If there was ever a company that could build a successful subscription business, it would be YouTube", Lyor Cohen, YouTube's head of music, said this week in an interview.

"If you are a subscriber to Google Play Music, good news, you get a YouTube Music Premium membership as part of your subscription each month". However, the leak from Lefsetz doesn't mention Play Music anywhere, so we'll have to wait for the official announcement from Google on its future.

In the meantime, what are your thoughts on the upcoming changes to YouTube Music?

In addition, YouTube has announced that will soon re-brand its premium subscription YouTube Red service as YouTube Premium, which will include access to all YouTube Originals as well as YouTube Music for $11.99 a month.

But like the recently revamped Google News, YouTube Music will offer personalized playlists based on data that Google/YouTube already has on you, with a pinch of AI, of course.

When contacted on Tuesday, Ndume declined to comment on the attack and his invitation by the probe panel. Security at the national assembly was beefed up in the anticipation of his return.

The music offerings from YouTube and Google have been disjointed and confusing for a long time - you may remember the short-lived YouTube Music Key, which essentially offered the same options as the new YouTube Music does, before it was shuttered in 2015. YouTube Music will have its own "reimagined" mobile app and desktop player and will eventually replace Google Play Music and the music component of YouTube Red (although the latter paid service will continue separate from YouTube Music as YouTube Premium, for $12 per month). Entering the gym? We'll suggest some beats to get the heart-rate going. Except that YouTube Red will now be known as YouTube Premium since it covers both music and video. That means no matter what kind of music you like, where you are, what you're doing, or what mood you're in, you can easily find the right playlist for that moment. YouTube Premium includes ad-free, background and offline across all of YouTube, as well as access to all YouTube Originals including Cobra Kai, Step Up: High Water and Youth & Consequences. It will be expanded to some other countries in the following weeks.

The new ad-supported version of YouTube Music will be available for free, while YouTube Music Premium, a paid membership without advertisements, will be available at $9.99 a month, YouTube said in a blog post.

The new YouTube Music app is soft-launching on Tuesday, "and then spread slowly thereafter".

YouTube may be the household name when it comes to online videos and some music but when it comes to monetizing that popularity, it has nothing on Netflix, Spotify, or even Apple Music.

Canada, along with Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, will see YouTube Music launch "soon".
