Martial and Lacazette left out of France squad

France manager Didier Deschamps in a press conference this evening explained his decision to omit Alexandre Lacazette and Anthony Martial from his 23-man Russia World Cup squad.

Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante and striker Olivier Giroud, Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba and Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris are the other England-based players in the 23-man squad.

There is no such hope for Payet, however, as he sustained a muscle injury in Olympique de Marseille's 3-0 defeat by Atletico Madrid in the Europa League final on Wednesday.

With so much attacking talent available there were always going to be casualties and Deschamps has preferred Ligue 1 stars Florian Thauvin and Nabil Fekir over Martial and Lacazette, who both had underwhelming Premier League campaigns.

Payet has been in impressive form with Marseille.

"It always seems impossible until it's done", wrote Mendy on Twitter.

Manchester United's Paul Pogba has been named as one of the midfielders, as has N'Golo Kante of Chelsea.

Both Martial and Lacazette are on the standby list of 11 players, which also includes Crystal Palace centre-back Mamadou Sakho, Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma and Tottenham midfielder Moussa Sissoko.

Deschamps has until June 4 before submitting his definitive squad list.

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema's global exile goes on - he has not played for France since October 2015 after being accused of involvement in a blackmail affair involving a sextape. "I have put my faith in players who have responded to that, and the squad comes before everything else", Deschamps said.

Before heading to Russian Federation, they will play three home friendlies, starting against the Republic of Ireland at the Stade de France on May 28.

For an exit in the playoffs of the world Cup team France, being one of the main favorites of the tournament, will compete with Australia, Peru and Denmark.
