Merkel Says Germany Remains Committed To Iran Nuclear Accord

"With such destructive measures, the American government is trying to influence the will and decision of the remaining signatories of the JCPOA (nuclear agreement)", Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi was quoted as saying by Fars news agency.

"The civil war in Syria and the fight against Islamic terrorism have escalated into a regional conflict of an enormous scale, which can not be resolved without Russia, Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and, I would say, Europe", Merkel said in the Bundestag.

The relationship between Europe and the United States should endure differences such as the diplomatic dispute about Iran's nuclear program, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Wednesday.

"This agreement is not ideal, but, according to the IAEA, Iran abides by its commitments", the chancellor noted, TASS reports.

The chancellor also said Germany will remain committed to the Iran Nuclear Deal despite the US withdrawal.

"Participation in alliances and European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation membership are essential for Germany's own security".

Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump abandoned the pact he branded "the worst deal ever" and reimposed U.S. sanctions on Iran.

She added: "Britain, France and Germany were of the opinion that the agreement against Iran's nuclear armament is an agreement that certainly has weaknesses, but an agreement we should stand by".

"This agreement is anything but ideal", she told lawmakers, but noted that the United Nations nuclear watchdog has confirmed Iran is abiding by its terms.
