Gazidis Says Managing Arsenal Most Attractive Role In Football

Gazidis Says Managing Arsenal Most Attractive Role In Football

"In my career every year I grew up with new challenges". That's something that is in Arsenal's history and it's in my history as well.

Arsenal failed to qualify for the Champions League in 2017 and won't feature in the 2018-19 competition having previously been in every year since 1998.

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis on Wednesday claimed that the Gunners' job is the "most attractive" in world football. "All were interested in the position and we were unanimous in our choice of Unai to drive the next chapter of our history".

"Our first interview was on 25 April and our last was on the 15 May. All of the board members were energised by the recommendation & enthusiastically supported it", Gazidis said.

The former Paris St Germain boss spoke in English at his unveiling as he targeted a return to Premier League glory.

"He was extraordinarily well prepared with a knowledge of Arsenal and an analysis of all of our players, their qualities and how he can help them develop".

"He has a feeling and competitive energy and it is this passion, love for football and will to win that made us feel it as exactly right for Arsenal".

Gazidis felt a younger coach would slot better into a modern European football structure, complemented by head of recruitment Sven Mislintat and new head of football relations Raul Sanllehi. "I know they already are, but I want them to continue to be".

"All the conversations I have had with the club shows we share the same vision for the club".

The Gunners last won the league title in 2004 but have collected three FA Cup trophies in the last five seasons.

Gazidis also tellingly revealed Emery has penned a contract for three years.

The 46-year-old Spaniard arrives at the club following a two-year spell at PSG.

Arsenal had been on the lookout for a new boss after Wenger confirmed that he would be stepping down at the end of the season after 22 years in charge of the club. It's a triage style of decision-making led by Gazidis where the manager or coach is expected to fit into a framework and have less overall responsibility.

"I think we need to understand that success isn't instant".

"It's a big challenge for me but I have worked also in other projects, big projects", he told reporters.

"Thank you, Arsene Wenger, for your legacy". They were not so on-board at PSG. Arsenal's new head coach, not "manager" as the club embrace collectivity after the emperor era of Arsène Wenger, stepped into the public gaze at the Emirates Stadium yesterday and certainly passed his first test.

Guardiola and Emery faced each other during their respective Barcelona and Valencia tenures, with the latter going on to Sevilla and a glorious run of three consecutive UEFA Europa League triumphs.
