Meanwhile, Sebastian Vettel lapped the street circuit in 1m11.039s, 0.229s behind Ricciardo; while Lewis Hamilton, who seemed to be in close contention against Ricciardo at one point, lost time in the final stages of Q3 and finished within half a second of the Red Bull behind Vettel.

"This was two years in the making", said Ricciardo, who couldn't use seventh or eighth gears once the problem struck. "I know there are sometimes races that are more fun when it's raining or there are more incidents so maybe it's just a one-off, but it was a tough one".

Daniel Ricciardo redressed the balance in Monaco as he claimed an illusive first Monte Carlo win - though he was made to work for it by an engine issue. It's just insane that this is the nicest event, it's like the most spectacular event of the whole year, and practice and all that is great fun, but the race may be the most boring.

"For example, maybe we change it one or two percent during a whole race so to go seven percent is a lot". "I finally feel the redemption has arrived".

" "Only 40 laps to go" I was like 'Oh my God, please...' and then when it finished I was like, 'Thank goodness.' said I had 13 laps and I swear I had driven another ten and then you've got ten laps left to go and I was like 'Oh my God, this is going to be the longest last ten laps of my life!'"

After the race, it was revealed his engine lost the MGU-K - meaning his vehicle was lacking a significant amount of power compared to his rivals - but he held on, somehow, to record his second win of the year and propel himself right back into championship contention. So I'm stoked. There was a few doubts that came in mid race.

"This place bites hard if you abuse it, and unfortunately, he's a very fast driver, we know that, and this weekend he's got a great vehicle and nobody will be more frustrated than him that, having watched that qualifying he should have been competing for the front row today", said Horner. We lose the MGU-K 17 or 18 laps into the race.

Sergey Sirotkin's race was undone even before the start as his wheels were not fitted prior to the three-minute signal. That means his rear brake temperatures are going through the roof. Really delighted for the pole but we should have had two cars up there and it's frustrating with such a fast vehicle not to have both cars on the front row of the grid. "That's pretty cool and I will try to keep it going for now". An imperious drive in qualifying has given him a commanding pole, and this race is his to squander. That was entirely possible given the problems Ricciardo was facing, but despite being restricted to just six gears, the Red Bull driver held everything together.

"I was a bit confused because I didn't really think I sped in the pit lane, I was a bit surprised, I thought I had done everything OK".

Ricciardo has now jumped Mercedes Valtteri Bottas to move into third in the drivers' standings, 24 points behind Vettel and 38 behind Hamilton.

It was his second win of the season after the Chinese GP last month, pushing him up to third in the title race.
