Weinstein bailed on rape charges

Disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein was charged Friday with counts of felony rape and committing a criminal sex act, stemming from cases involving two women, prosecutors said.

For at least some of the dozens of women who came forward in recent months to accuse Weinstein of alleged sexual assault or misconduct, this is a day they have been waiting for.

Weinstein was carrying three books, including Todd Purdum's "Something Wonderful: Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway Revolution", as he got out of a black SUV and walked past the swarm of TV cameras and reporters and through the front door of the New York Police Department's First Precinct in Manhattan yesterday.

Embattled Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein turned himself in to police on Friday morning on criminal charges including rape and sexual misconduct. Weinstein agreed to post $1 million cash bail, wear an electronic monitor and not travel beyond NY and CT.

Before turning himself in, Weinstein had been spotted enjoying lunch in Malibu on Wednesday in a photo obtained by TMZ. When another asked him, "What can you say?"

Weinstein was charged with rape and a criminal sex act as well as lower-level sex abuse and sexual misconduct charges. She was among the first women to speak out about the producer. While she was there, Mr. Weinstein called her and set up a meeting for the following day.

He has denied having non-consensual sex with anyone.

New York Times journalist Jodi Kantor, who shared a Pulitzer Prize for her reporting on the Weinstein allegations, on Twitter listed the reactions she had heard from victims. "At a certain point, you have to think about the greater good of humanity, of womankind". "The man who pinned me down had handcuffs on him today", she added. "But I have a visceral need for him to have handcuffs on him".

The charges follow a months-long investigation that involved the Manhattan district attorney's office.

Time's Up, an organization born out of the Weinstein scandal that is dedicated to fighting inequality and injustice in the workplace, also posted a lengthy note online.

A grand jury has been hearing evidence in the case for weeks. Variety reported that he will not be allowed to leave the states of NY and CT. That investigation is in its preliminary stages. Several actresses and models accused him of criminal sexual assaults, but numerous encounters happened too long ago for any prosecution. "Today is big. But sexual violence is still happening".

Actress Rose McGowan, who has accused Weinstein of raping her at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival, said she was "shocked".

"If I'm allowed to, I will attend", McGowan told the AP. Because it's all true. "I was purposely sat there, it was very awkward, she wouldn't look at my face, that is all I am going to say about that".

Over the past few months, prosecutors in NY and L.A. have been building cases against Weinstein.

The New York charges are the first against Weinstein, even though several other cities opened up investigations into the producer in the wake of the reporting on the allegations.

Previously, TMZ had named Lucia Evans as one of the alleged victims in the case.
