India wants Iran nuclear deal partners to engage after US pullout

India, a long-time buyer of oil from both Iran and Venezuela, only complies with United Nations-mandated sanctions and not those imposed by one country on another, said foreign minister Sushma Swaraj at a press conference in New Delhi on Monday.

Swaraj is scheduled to hold talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif later on Monday.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a right wing Hindu nationalist, had earlier seemed to waver over how to deal with Trump's violation of the UN Security Council-backed Iran nuclear deal (the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action or JCPOA).

Iranian lawmakers held high-level meetings with the European Union this week, with those close to the negotiations saying Tehran is attempting to circumvent American sanctions just weeks after President Trump withdrew from the global nuclear agreement. "Now they're bragging about violating Iran sanctions too".

Bilateral trade between India and Iran amounted to $12.9 billion past year.

India continued trade with Iran during previous sanctions but had to cut oil imports as the sanctions choked off banking channels and insurance cover for tankers.

"There is a lot of concern in the US, in both the administration and the Congress, over the S-400 system", US Arms Service Committee Chairperson Mac Thornberry told reporters in New Delhi. India has been working closely with Iran to develop its Chabahar Port to beat Pakistan and China in the regional strategic competition and the US's sudden escalation of things with Iran is going to hurt India's interests. And while the US has not minced words in expressing its displeasure with the possibility of a deal for S-400 systems, Thornberry - head of all US Military Services and US Department of Defence agencies - has said there is room for flexibility despite the looming deal, possibly because India and Russian Federation have a long history of bilateral arms trade.

Iran, being one of India's top oil suppliers, boasts a long-standing political and economical relationship with New Delhi.

Also, India has their own history of conflict and experience with countries that fall under socialist or communist dictators in their part of the world. "In the course of these 60 days, the French government may also initiate talks with the U.S. government aimed at ensuring Total's stay in Iran", the Iranian oil ministry's news service Shana quoted the minister as saying.
