Nipah virus claims one more life in Kozhikode

Nipah virus claims one more life in Kozhikode

Out of the 17 people, three died in last two days and are suspected to have been contracted when they came in touch with another infected person.

Since Nipah virus attack has been restricted to just two Kerala districts at present, Indian Medical Association (IMA) doctors have said that there is no need for people or medical practitioners to get panicked in the city, or for that matter in the state.

As part of "Nipah alert", those who visited Kozhikode Medical College casualty, CT scan room and waiting room on May 14 and the Balussery Taluk Hospital on May 18 have been asked to contact the Nipah cell immediately. The World Health Organization (WHO) released the data of the lives that Nipah virus claimed. Since the natural hosts of the Nipah virus are fruit bats of the Pteropodidae family, Pteropus genus, the government is trying to track down the infected virus to stop its spread, but the delay has caused several deaths. Following the Nipah scare, the Kozhikode district administration has postponed reopening of schools in the district after summer holidays till June 12.

Public health officials at primary health centres are being trained to identify symptoms and transmission of the virus. As Nipah virus encephalitis can be transmitted from person to person, standard infection control practices and proper barrier nursing techniques are important in preventing hospital-acquired infections. The blood and body fluids of Sabith (26), the first person to die with symptoms, had not been collected for analyses as the death had occurred much before suspicions about the presence of the virus had come up.

But even as the situation is stated to be officially under control, people in Kozhikode district are taking extra precautions with many people seen wearing masks outdoors.

The antibodies to fight the Nipah Virus have also arrived in Kozhikode.

The Delhi government on Friday, issued an advisory asking people to be cautious, and said that no human infection from the deadly virus has been reported in the national capital.

Since 1998 to 2015, more than 600 cases of Nipah virus human infections have been reported. It has been found to be effective in vitro (in cells or microorganisms placed in a test tube or culture dish). Reports say it has not been tested on humans so far but can be used on compassionate grounds.
