Suicide rates have been rising significantly in nearly every state; in both men and women; and across all age and ethnic groups, according to an alarming new CDC report released the same week that both fashion designer Kate Spade and celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain reportedly took their own lives. "This study found that approximately half of suicide decedents in NVDRS did not have a known mental health condition, indicating that additional focus on non-mental health factors further upstream could provide important information for a public health approach".

Twenty-five states had suicide rates that increased more than 30 percent, and the highest increase was seen in North Dakota at 57.6 percent. "Suicide is one of the top 10 causes of death in the USA right now, and it's one of three causes that is actually increasing recently, so we do consider it a public health problem-and something that is all around us". Other studies have found much higher rates of mental health disorders among people at high risk of suicide, experts noted.

The report details a dramatic increase in incidents of suicide in Kansas, particularly among females. Montana, Idaho, the Dakotas, and Wyoming all saw increases between 38 and 58 percent. Only Nevada did not record a rise.

The CDC study found that 54% of Americans who died by suicide had no known mental health illness.

The new report also found that, among USA states and the District of Columbia, suicide rates varied fourfold in 2014-2016, from about 7 per 100,000 residents per year in Washington, D.C., to 29 per 100,000 residents per year in Montana.

And deaths by suicide have been steadily increasing across the country for almost two decades, according to a new government report released on Thursday.

Calls for better suicide-prevention efforts are mounting, after a federal study identified a sharp rise in suicide rates in the United States over the past two decades. "We need to intervene in both mental and public health cases", Dr Reed says. Over 1,000 people die by suicide in our state each year, but the norm isn't suicide death. The CDC's Vital Signs report notes that the rates of most causes of death have been declining.

"It's a tragedy for families and communities across the country", said Dr. Anne Schuchat, the agency's principal deputy director.

'For those who do not understand depression, when someone is in that place it is not because they want to die ... it is because the ongoing, relentless darkness is too painful to endure anymore. "They might actually bring up specifically that they're thinking of suicide". With considerations to gender, significant suicide rate increases were observed among males and females in 34 and 43 states, respectively. Be there with them, and listen to them. 4.
