Donald Trump, Kim Jong Un prepare for Singapore summit

"We were able to complete the preparations for the historic summit, and I would like to thank you for that", Kim, speaking through an interpreter, told Lee.

Security has been tightened today around a location declared as a "special event area" related to the upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Trump on Sunday called the unprecedented summit, at which North Korea's nuclear arsenal will be at the top of the agenda, a "one-time shot" at peace.

The US president has said he hasn't prepped much for these talks.

"Prime Minister Lee complimented the bold and admirable decision by Chairman Kim and President of the United States Donald Trump to come together for this Summit".

Sky News video showed the impressive motorcade that that carried Kim from the airport to his overnight lodgings.

An unsuccessful summit, which will begin Monday night Washington time, could plunge U.S.

Pompeo had earlier tweeted a photograph at breakfast with ambassador Kim, stating the U.S. position was unchanged: "We remain committed to the complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula". Trump canceled the meeting, but made a decision to move ahead with it a week later after a visit to Washington by a top North Korean official. Some analysts said a Kim commitment to specific negotiations on denuclearisation could well be enough for Tuesday's summit to be a success.

But he has since lowered expectations, backing away from an original demand for North Korea's swift denuclearisation.

At the Istana, Lee's official residence, the president shook hands with the prime minister, but Trump declined to answer shouted questions from reporters before the two leaders joined their aides for a luncheon.

US allies are anxious that Trump could upend decades of global precedent, NPR's Mara Liasson reported on Weekend Edition Sunday.

North Korea and the USA appeared on the brink of war past year with their leaders trading insults and threats until Kim made a dramatic offer in March to meet Trump and discuss nuclear disarmament, which the U.S. president quickly accepted. It also annoyed Singapore residents by offering to pay Kim's hotel bill.

North Korea had also threatened to strike Guam, an American territory in the Pacific Ocean.

While en route to Singapore, Trump said he looked forward to meeting Kim on what he anticipated would be an exciting day. The leaders are spending the night at hotels about a half-mile apart in the upscale shopping area in Tanglin.

That tension meant Trump surprised both foreign allies and his own advisers when he accepted Kim's invitation to this summit in April.

The official did not rule out the possibility that additional activities could be added to tomorrow's schedule, beyond the two planned meetings with Kim, ABC News' Jordyn Phelps reports. Long-time United States allies like Canada and Germany protested Trump-backed tariffs on their exports, and threatened to retaliate with their own tariffs on U.S. products. The newspaper said the vehicles weren't from a local authorized dealer, which suggests the cars were brought in specifically for the summit and may be used by Kim.

Trump hopes the landmark talks will kick-start a process that eventually see Kim give up his nuclear weapons in an irreversible manner that can be verified internationally.
