Dwane Casey agrees to 5-year deal with Detroit

The team had reportedly narrowed down its search between Casey and John Beillin of the University of MI last week.

The Detroit Pistons are hiring Dwane Casey to be their next head coach, according to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. The NBA coach of the year finalist was sacked shortly after Toronto was swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

But the franchise had its eyes on an National Basketball Association finals appearance this year after winning a franchise-record 59 games in the regular season, the second best record in the league behind only Houston. "As a team, we are constantly trying to grow and improve in order to get to the next level".

Van Gundy held the title of both head coach and president of basketball operations, which will now be overseen by Ed Stefanski.

Mr Kim's itinerary was reported in detail, which is a rarity for the state's media, according to South Korea's Yonhap news agency. He said that those talks "in fact are moving quite rapidly and will come to a logical conclusion more quickly than anticipated".

Despite missing the playoffs, Detroit traded for Blake Griffin and have a strong tandem of him and centre Andre Drummond.

Other candidates who advanced to meetings with Gores in the final round of Detroit's search include the University of MI coach John Beilein, the longtime broadcaster Kenny Smith and the San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Ime Udoka.

"I am excited and honored to join the Detroit Pistons, a franchise with a championship history and a roster that is ready to win now", Mr. Casey said. Casey was sacked on May 11 with one year remaining on his contract at a reported $6.5 million.

Detroit's playoff appearance in 2015-16 was their only one since 2008-09 when they were bounced in the first round by LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Casey's 2005-06 squad finished in the NBA's top 10 in fewest average points per game and lowest opponent field goal percentage.
