Kim Handshake to Open Summit With Outcome Hanging in Balance

Trump is scheduled to meet Kim on Tuesday, and possibly on Wednesday, in Singapore.

Mr Kim and Mr Trump arrived in Singapore on Sunday for what will be the first-ever summit, set to held on Tuesday (June 12), between a leader of North Korea and a sitting U.S. president.

President Trump landed in Singapore's on Sunday, hoping to replace the frostiness of the G-7 meeting by making history with one of the world's most isolated dictators.

Kim had arrived hours earlier in a plane loaned by China, which for decades has been North Korea's only major ally.

"If diplomacy does not move in the right direction ... those measures will increase".

North Korea has changed its narrative in recent months.

Trump thanked the prime minister for Singapore's efforts to host the summit, the first-ever between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader, at a hotel on the city-state's resort island of Sentosa on Tuesday.

If things fall apart, it could be because "Trump presents Kim with a hard-and-fast binary choice: relinquish nuclear weapons and live in peace and prosperity, or cling to them and risk the impoverishment of your people and the safety of your regime", Haas said.

Kia spokesman James Bell said the company "is attempting to have a remedy by the scheduled owner notification date of July 27". The safety agency said at the time it had reports of six front-end crashes with significant damage to the cars.

The city-state's foreign minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, tweeted a picture of himself shaking hands with Kim at Changi Airport, and the North Korean leader was driven into the center in a stretch limousine, accompanied by a convoy of more than 20 vehicles.

On the way back to his hotel, Kim walked along a promenade near the Merlion, a giant statue, and fountain, of a mythical creature, half lion, half fish - Singapore's unofficial mascot. Trump and Kim lookalikes held a summit of their own at a local shopping mall, while one bistro is offering a libation known as the Trump-Kim "Bromance:" Beer, tequila, diet Coke and the Korean distilled rice liquor known as soju.

Just a few months ago, Kim was an worldwide pariah accused of ordering the killing of his uncle, a half-brother and scores of officials suspected of disloyalty.

The despot took a break from official government business on Monday to take a mini tour with Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, his sister and other top deputies.

On Sunday evening Kim met with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Reunification, he said, would be impossible because four powers - the US, China, Russia and Japan - do not want to see a unified Korea.

Rodong Sinmun newspaper also seems to be preparing people for talks with the "enemy", publishing an editorial on North Korea's need to establish relations with other countries.

He also shared a photo of himself and Trump and told the entire world that he's "honored" to call the president a friend. Abbreviating the meeting to a single day could make it easier to cast the summit as an early, symbolic opening, rather than a substantive negotiation in which a lack of tangible progress would suggest failure on the part of the negotiators.
