North Korea leader Kim arrives in Singapore ahead of Trump meeting

Arriving at the Prime Minister's office after 1900 local time, Kim shook hands with Lee and his staff then sat down to begin talks in front of the cameras before the press was ushered out a few minutes later.

Experts, and even Trump himself, have admitted that the summit will probably just be the start of a yearslong denuclearization process. "That's what I do".

Pompeo met Kim in May ahead of Tuesday's meeting. The president abruptly called off the meeting in May, only to revive it eight days later.

Singapore's Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and Singapore's Education Minister Ong Ye Kung pose for a photo in Singapore, June 11, 2018, in this photo obtained from social media.

"Both leaders want to score some diplomatic points", he added. But the president, who sees himself as a born deal-maker, downplayed the value of such last-minute cramming.

After a pre-summit meeting of G-7 finance ministers, in which Washington was rebuked by the other six members on June 2, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said that despite sharp disagreements on trade, the other countries remain "our most important allies". But I really feel confident.

"Kim Jong Un is revered as a god-like being in his country, while outside the North, he's been subject to hostility because of the way his regime is run, and that's enough to always cause safety concerns for his officials", said Chae.

The Economist and CNN do not predict a favourable result for the Trump-Kim summit either.

Kim Yo Jong, believed to be 30 and one of the North Korean leader's closest confidants, reportedly arrived at Singapore's Changi Airport about an hour after the despot's Chinese charter plane touched down. Lee has said the summit would cost Singapore about 20 million Singapore dollars ($15 million), more than half of which would go on security. "That elevates his position, prestige, and power tremendously".

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement that the meetings were "substantive and detailed" but there was no immediate word on what the outcome was.

South Korea's KOSPI added 0.65 percent, and Japan's Nikkei climbed 0.55 percent.

Trump fired back in a tweet, saying "I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!"

Tensions between the two countries escalated in 2017 after Pyongyang stepped up efforts to boost its nuclear weapons programme.

It wasn't immediately clear what specific progress, if any, had been made in preliminary discussions between US and North Korean officials in the run-up to the Tuesday summit. With each round of diplomacy, Pyongyang's weapons grew more advanced and more risky.

North Korea's official newspaper Rodong Sinmun proclaimed Kim's arrival in Singapore on its front page, in unusually swift coverage of his worldwide visit.

"I also think I'll know whether or not it will happen fast.it may not".

Pompeo said he's received personal assurances from Kim that North Korea is ready to denuclearize.

President Donald Trump waves from inside his auto as he heads into the Istana Presidential Palace, where he will meet with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, 11 June 2018. "We've seen how many inadequate agreements have been struck in the past".

In contrast, Mr Trump reached the White House via a career in property development and reality television, followed by an unprecedentedly populist presidential campaign that upended the United States political establishment.

Timing and verification will be crucial to the success of any nuclear deal.
