G7 divides to G6 plus Trump over trade war threat

Trump appeared to acquiesce to Merkel and other leaders' positions, as the G-7 issued a joint statement to uphold "free, fair, and mutually beneficial trade" at the end of the two-day summit.

Europe will implement counter-measures against US tariffs on steel and aluminium just like Canada, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Sunday, voicing regret about President Donald Trump's abrupt decision to withdraw support for a G7 communique.

Trump also complained about German tariffs on US automobiles and the ease with which German carmakers can sell into the American market.

Last week, Macron candidly criticized Trump's policies during a phone call over trade and immigration that turned sour, two sources told CNN.

The leaders had been meeting at the Group of Seven summit in Quebec, Canada over the weekend.

"One risk is that others will take advantage of this apparent vacuum in American leadership and the lack of trans-Atlantic consensus and act in ways that will harm trans-Atlantic interests, whether it's Russian Federation in the Eurasia. or China in Asia", said Ian Lesser, of the German Marshall Fund.

"There remain good reasons to fight for the transatlantic partnership", she said, adding that the current round of trade tariffs that the U.S. and European Union have imposed on each other did not signal the end of a partnership.

While Italy's new premier Giuseppe Conte, the head of a populist coalition, sided with Trump, many other European leaders were horrified and warned against the idea. In one picture, while the former United States president is seen engaging in talks with the experts, in the other picture he can be seen sharing a light moment with Angela Merkel with watching the European soccer match.

Throughout the summit, photographers captured photos of the tension between Trump and other world leaders.

Unlike a year ago - when those first few games realistically settled things - Thiem bounced back, breaking straight away. He has come close in Paris before, losing in the semifinals past year (to Nadal ) and in 2016 (to Novak Djokovic ).

Instead, Canada's expected to issue a chair's summary of the meeting.

"According to a Canada release, they make nearly 100 Billion Dollars in Trade with USA (guess they were bragging and got caught!)".

This Trumped-up trade war is symptomatic of the president's cavalier attitude toward countries that share America's democratic values.

While the G7 chiefs have largely praised Trump for his efforts to stabilize the Korean peninsula, they are unhappy he pulled out of an global agreement created to limit Iran's nuclear ambitions.

"PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, "US Tariffs were kind of insulting" and he "will not be pushed around".

Why isn't the European Union and Canada informing the public that for years they have used massive Trade Tariffs and non-monetary Trade Barriers against the U.S. Totally unfair to our farmers, workers & companies.

"It looked like he had cracked the code", said Smith, now with the Center for a New American Security in Washington.

"The other countries of the G-6 are a larger market than the American market", Macron said.
